Network Instruments Software Probes Features

Monitor and troubleshoot vital network links in real time from any location

Network Instruments® offers a complete line of Software Probes for monitoring network activity across multiple topologies.

Choose from a diverse range of probe options to meet your specific network needs. Network Instruments probes support LAN, WAN, gigabit, 10 gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel, and 802.11. Additional options include RMON and HCRMON support. Use probes for troubleshooting, collecting NetFlow data, proactive monitoring, long-term data collection, or for network forensics. Probes report to Observer consoles located anywhere on the network for complete, distributed visibility.

Probe Advantages

  • Gain insight and visibility into every part of the network
  • Manage remote networks as easily as local networks
  • Eliminate the time and expense of traveling to remote sites
  • Speed troubleshooting by sharing probe-collected data with others

Probes report to Observer

Software Probes Report to Observer Consoles for In-Depth Analysis

  • Over 590 protocol decodes
  • Nanosecond resolution
  • A graphical filter rule editor to easily create complex filters
  • Triggers and alarms for immediate alerts on network activity or errors
  • Application analysis statistics, including response time and total/failed transactions for common applications such as SQL, Citrix, MS Exchange, Oracle, VoIP, and DNS
  • Over 570 real-time Experts
  • In-depth VoIP analysis, including call detail records, aggregate call summaries, QoS, MOS, and R-factor
  • Real-time statistics on network activity such as bandwidth utilization, Top Talkers, VLANs, and Internet usage
  • Data stream reconstruction, including web pages, e-mails, and instant messages
  • MultiHop Analysis tracks conversations as it hops through up to 10 network segments, showing packet loss along the way
  • Automated and customized network trending and reporting
  • Statistics and packet captures/decodes that adhere to RMON 1, RMON 2, and HCRMON standards.

RMON Support

All Software Probes can be turned into an RMON probe supporting all 21 RMON groups with full adherence to all RFCs. A probe running in RMON mode can report to any RMON or SNMP management console.

Monitor your entire network through a single console interface by deploying software probes throughout your enterprise. Whether you have many remote offices or multiple network closets, Network Instruments probes offer complete access to remote data without the time and expense of travel.

Software-based probes are installed on a LAN, wireless network, segment, or switch to collect data and report back to the Observer console. Appropriate for analyzing speeds of up to 1000 Mbps or for low-utilization gigabit networks via a SPAN port on a switch.

The Network Instruments Probe Family of Products was designed to meet the needs of any size organization. Choose software-based Probes to monitor remote LANs and wireless networks or a turn-key, hardware-based solution for full-duplex, gigabit networks. As with all Network Instruments products, our remote probes are designed with our own unique Distributed Network Analysis (NI-DNA) architecture to provide the capabilities needed to manage complex, growing environments.

With Network Instruments Probes, an administrator can:

  • Continuously collect and store remote network information for baseline comparison
  • Protect network data with passwords and data encryption
  • Adhere to RMON and HCRMON standards with RMON probe option

Software Based Probes for Speeds up to 1000MB

Software-based Probes are installed on a remote LAN, wireless network, segment or switch to collect data, report back to the Observer console. Remote software-based Probes are appropriate for analysis speeds up to 1000MB or for low utilization gigabit networks via a TAP port on a switch.

Software-Based Probes are available in four versions: Advanced Single Probes, Advanced Multi-Probes, Advanced Expert Probes and RMON Probes. Advanced Probes provide enormous power and functionality designed to fit the growing needs of your network.

Advanced Expert Probes offer real-time packet capture/decode and Expert processing at remote locations. RMON Probes provide statistics, packet capture, packet decode and trending to an RMON management console or collection facility.
